![]() ![]() | Information: Daffodil Bulb Project Daffodils look great planted in front of shrubs, in a flower border or rock garden or they may be massed together in a bed by themselves or combined with other plants. Choose a site where water does not stand and the soil is not soggy. Well-drained soil is essential. A raised bed or gentle slope is ideal. Daffodils enjoy having some sun, but can bloom in the shade. Plant the bulbs anytime between now and the end of December. Bulbs must form roots and grow underground during the winter to produce flowers in the spring. When planting a mass of bulbs in a large area it is easiest to prepare the soil first by digging and loosening it to a depth of 10-12”. This is a good time to improve the soil with generous amounts of compost or leaf mold. Rake the surface smooth and lay the bulbs out where they will be planted. Using a trowel or bulb planter, plant the bulbs with the pointed end up. A flower-bulb fertilizer can be placed in the hole before you plant the bulb. Daffodils should be planted 6-8” deep. After planting, water the bulbs thoroughly. If winter is extremely cold mulch can be applied over the bulbs after the soil freezes to keep the soil from heaving. After the bloom fades it is essential to leave the plant alone, allowing the leaves to turn brown and remain undisturbed for a period of 6-8 weeks. This is how the plant receives the necessary nourishment to bloom the next year. Ardmore Beautification Council, a private, operating foundation, developed their very successsful Bulb Project in 1991. They provide local schools, churches, adopt-a-spot businesses and non-profits with pre-chilled daffodil bulbs that will naturalize in our climate. No fees are charged to organizations receiving the bulbs. This project received 1st place honors as an "Outstanding Community Effort" at the 1996 statewide Govenor’s Conference on the Environment. These plantings make an attractive addition to Southern Oklahoma’s late winter/early spring landscape. Print the Daffodil Bulb Request Form or fill out the Online Daffodil Bulb Request Form |
